St. Joseph's Hospice Sarnia Lambton:

St. Joseph’s Hospice Resource Centre of Sarnia Lambton is a faith-based, charitable, not-for-profit organization that provides quality of life at the end of life offering compassionate, holistic care and to support individuals living with to those grieving the loss of a loved one. Hospice programs and services are offered at no cost and are available irrespective of age, gender, religion, race, ethnicity or economic status.

Acting in alignment with the Hospice Mission, Vision and Values, the Grief and Bereavement Counsellor provides short-term grief and bereavement counselling to clients who are grieving the death of a significant person in their life.

Position Description:
Qualifications:
  • Membership and in good standing with a regulated College (e.g., OCSWSSW, CPO) is required.
  • Master's degree in counselling, social work, psychology or equivalent.
  • Suicide Intervention Training (ASIST) required.
  • Certificate in Grief and Bereavement or Thanatology preferred.
  • Fundamentals of Hospice Palliative Care or commitment to obtain in 3 months.
Skills, Abilities and Experience:
  • A minimum of two years' experience providing individual grief and bereavement counselling.
  • Experience in group facilitation and public speaking.
  • Strong self-awareness, reflective skills, and ability to maintain professional boundaries related to therapeutic alliance and interaction.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers and electronic documentation systems.  
  • Proven ability to manage time, organize priorities, and adapt to an ever-changing workload.
  • First Aid Certificate.
  • Clear understanding and commitment to ethics, as they relate to Hospice Palliative Care.
  • Valid driver's license in Ontario.
Principal Duties:
  • Provide individual counselling and work collaboratively with clients reviewing goals and progress regularly throughout their service involvement.
  • Manage a caseload for assigned clients in accordance with regulatory, professional and Hospice standards.  
  • Mentor students from partnering colleges and universities.
  • Collaborate across teams and support fundraising efforts.
  • Hours of operation 8:30am-4:30pm, flexibility is required to work evening for programming and special events as scheduled.
